The Znojmo underground
When you visit town Znojmo in southern Moravia, there is available very interesting tour in case of bad weather the Znojmo underground. We were offered many ways how to go through this labyrinth of passages from classic tours even to adrenaline climbing.
From two dates found in the nowadays we assume that the beginning of the building of tunnels falls in the late 14th and 15th centuries. At that time, the development of Znojmo was intense, hence the number of stone buildings was increased. Each of the residential buildings had underground rooms, probably used for agricultural purposes and originally forming the lower level cellar. The premises were built and interconnected in irregular periods, originally an area of 35-40 hectares, which is below the historical center. In its construction were involved laborers, workers and the urban workers, one of the discoveries testifies also share of miners from Jihlava, experts on rock work. Low number of staff and hard and solid rocks were certainly the reason that the underground constructed took up several centuries. They used simple means which are commensurate with the medieval technique: chisel, rasp, canine and means for discharging mined material.
And what awaits us in the basement? We can choose from a variety of tours, both guided and classical comfortable walking in the catacombs under the city center or to give preference to one of adrenalin tours. In the offer we find the three routes, choose ourselves, on what difficulty we feel. To imagine there are metal hatches before entering underground. The hardest includes two and a half hours very challenging route with interesting Jesuit water, lines medieval well, examples of the original tunnels in the rock, the exhibition "History of the Underground"
We followed the basic route and entered the first floor of the underground. Corridors intertwine beneath houses and some parts actually a continuation of the house above them. Approximately one kilometer long trail starts at the Slepičí trh (the Hen's market)and ends in Obroková street, connecting the Upper Square (Horní náměstí) with the Square of Masaryk.
In state of emergency the corridors entered directly from the houses and ingenious disguise did not provide the enemy with the possibility of finding shelter. Yet another improvement was the possibility of heating in cold areas and it was created by a very special way. Chimneys from the stove directly followed not domestic chimney but the stove mounted over corridors. So the town of Znojmo was empty when the strikers arrived, but there was smoke from the chimneys. Therefore it has been called a ghost town and strikers were scared of him. Of course there was a sophisticated ventilation and drainage system.
Guided walk through this intricate underground system which apparently had never had an exact plan and for total secrecy from the enemy. And to make things even more exciting, we find a prison with torture chamber where we are terrified with tortured prisoners and their sreams.
